Do I need travel insurance for France?

You don’t need travel insurance for France, but it’s absolutely worthwhile to have it in place.

It’s hard to prepare for or anticipate anything that could go wrong on your trip. And, while travel insurance won’t necessarily cure or resolve any issues that may arise – it can certainly help smooth any bumps you encounter along the way.

Therefore, it’s important to make sure you’re fully protected with a suitable travel insurance policy that can be sorted online in a matter of minutes.

If you have any pre-existing medical conditions that could affect your trip, then getting the right travel insurance is an absolute necessity.

The higher the risk of you falling ill, the more important it is to make sure you’re covered – just for your own peace of mind.

What does France travel insurance cover?

Travel insurance covering France as a destination includes a number of standard benefits from cancellation and loss of belongings to medical expenses and repatriation.

The cover will expand for certain things included within the policy on the basis of any pre-existing medical conditions you declare with your insurance provider.

That’s why it’s important to make sure you accurately inform your insurance provider about your condition – so that you get the right level of cover to suit your personal circumstances.

It doesn’t matter whether it’s a romantic city break or a beach holiday on the French Riviera – it’s easy to find a policy that works for you.

Can I still use my EHIC in France?

UK citizens are able to apply for a Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC), launched as part of a UK/EU deal. This card will provide equivalent protection to the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), which is being phased out.

If you have a currently valid EHIC card, you can continue to use it until it expires – but from 1st January 2021, it is only valid in the EU.

You can find out all of the information on the new GHIC card, and how to apply, over on our guide below.

Taking medication into France

Always check with your doctor, travel agent, or online to find out exactly what sort of medication can and can’t be brought into France.

However, since most common prescription drugs are permitted – as a rule of thumb, the best thing to do is to keep all your medication in its original packaging/containers with the prescription label when you travel.

In some cases, you may also need a medical note from your doctor (but check with your airline/ferry company first).

Frequently Asked Questions

It's easy! Enter your details just once and you'll be able to compare quotes from over 30 specialist providers. We'll even e-mail your top quotes to you so you can access them at any time. Once you've found the policy that is right for you, pay securely online and your documents will be sent to you directly from your insurance provider.

You must have a permanent UK address, have lived in the UK for the last 6 months and be registered with a medical practitioner in the UK. All trips must start and end in the UK and you must purchase the insurance before you depart for your first trip.

Single Trip insurance is for one-off, individual trips and will cover your specified travel dates. This is usually up to 45 days; however, some insurance providers can cover up to 94 days. If you’re not a frequent traveller, single trip cover is a great option and will likely be cheaper than an annual multi-trip cover.

If you travel 2 or more times a year, annual trip cover may very well save you money. The maximum duration of any trip will always be specified and will vary by provider. But don't worry, when you get a quote, we'll ask you what your maximum trip length is and only show you quotes that match!

A pre-existing condition is a diagnosed medical condition that existed before taking out a policy. We'll ask a series of questions about the medical history for you and any travellers on your quote. If you answer yes to any of these, you will need to tell us about the traveller's conditions. This could be a condition that a traveller has now or has had in the past. If you are not sure what conditions you need to declare, we have online support available to help you 24/7!

You can send your question to our team, or visit our help centre on Destinations.
